Bowes Mouse

According to the information provided bij the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham (UK) this mouse measures 11 cm in lenght, tail included. The mouse is made of gold with seed pearl decorations all over its body and garnet eyes. It is not certain where it originates. Probably this mouse was born in Switzerland, about 1818.

It was found bij Joséphine Bowes in 1871 in London, at the jewellery shop of P. Albert. Since it feeds on precious stones such as diamonds and sapphires the owner of the shop was glad to be rid of it. It has lived in the Bowes Museum ever since, but pays a visit to his cousin the Siberian Mouse this autumn.
