Jubilee Concert Werkgroep Eigen Werk, May 21, 20.00 hours, Artishock Soest (the Netherlands)

Dear readers, dear friends, dear Sillizens!

About 25 years ago Ms M. was part of the illustrious music band Werkgroep Eigen Werk (Our own work) (WEW). This was one of the many 'working groups' of the cultural centre Artishock in Soest and it existed until the 90's. Because of the 50 years anniversary of Artishock the executive committee asked some former members if they would reunite and give a jubilee concert. To which they responded with great enthusiasm.

A free jubilee concert

The instruments were taken out of the mothballs, songs were delved out of archives and croaking throats were cleared. After many months of practice this will result in a free jubilee concert, Sunday night May 21, at Artishock, Steenhoffstraat 46A, Soest. The doors open at 20.00 hours. For more information see the website of Artishock and the facebookpage of the WEW.

The cast then and now

The WEW's repertoire was and is mainly written, composed and sung by lead-singer and guitar player Jan, also known as Jan the Comics Man. As such in 1986 he made the portrait of the WEW above. The cast of that time was, from left to right: Herman (washboard), Rob (saxophone), Jan (vocals, guitar), Roland (drums), Josje (vocals), Modita (vocals), Ms M. (vocals and recorder) and Ben (bass). Through the years the cast changed regularly. At May 21 Jan, Ben, Roland, Modita and Ms. M. will be accompanied by Semmy (saxophone) and Elly and Roselle (vocals).

How it all started...

The WEW started in 1983 with playing covers. Shortly thereafter two theatre plays with their own songs were performed. Back then, in the 80's, unemployment, economical crisis and threat of war were current and found their way into the songs and sketches. Later on the WEW continued with concerts, for example during demonstrations against the cruise missiles, at the Artishock Art Market at Queen's Day and now and again at other events and festivals. For more information about the history of the WEW see the blogStripman's prikbord.

Themes of past and present...

At May 21, 2017 the WEW will perform a selection of mostly old songs but also some new ones. One is written and composed by Ms M. herself! The themes of the 80's: war, dementia, the (lack of) care for the elderly, environmental pollution, unfortunately are still current. But happily enough humour is never far away and you will experience a fascinating evening filled with music, film and photographs illustrating the WEW's rich history.
